The C.A. Johnson Hornets got a strong start to what their week, defeating Lamar 85-50 at home on Monday.

With the win, the Hornets are 13-9 overall and 7-1 in Region 3-A, tied for the top seed with Great Falls. Johnson will face Great Falls in a tiebreaker at Camden on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Seniors Nate Nelson, Peter Goodman and Mike Knox posted double-digit scoring Monday, with Knox’s 19 points leading the game.

“You can’t account for the leadership that we have from these seniors,” C.A. Johnson coach Daryl Jarvis said. “Having nine has been tremendous this year.”

The Hornets trailed by three at the end of the first quarter, after a series of turnovers helped Lamar regain momentum. The Silver Foxes got back-to-back buckets off take-aways to take what would be their final lead.

“We came into the night, everybody was excited, a lot of emotions, but once we settled down and got in our groove, it was fine,” Jarvis said.

Johnson kicked its game into high gear at the start of the second period, commencing a 25-8 scoring run that left the Silver Foxes in a37-23 hole.

Led by Decobie Durant, who posted 15 points in the game, the Silver Foxes worked their way back. With a basket from Henry Coaxum, Lamar made it an 8-point game after three minutes of second-half play.

But it was all Hornets from there. Peter Goodman posted 10 points in the second half as C.A. Johnson pulled away.

“We have to play Wednesday and then turn around and play Thursday, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” coach Daryl Jarvis said. “Hopefully, if we take care of Wednesday, then we’ll kind of settle and we know that we will have the first two at home.”

“It’s really important that we rest, and mature quickly.”

But the key to sealing the region’s No. 1 seed is simple, he said.

“We have to make layups, and we have to make layups and we have to make layups,” Jarvis said.
