SCISA state hoops begin this weekend

The SCISA Class 3A state basketball tournament begins with preliminary round games on Friday and Saturday at various sites. The action switches to the Sumter Civic Center next week.
The Hammond and Cardinal Newman girls are in action tonight. Hammond (15-8) plays two-time defending state champion Pinewood Prep at 6:30 p.m. at Porter-Gaud. Cardinal Newman (8-11) squares off against Laurence Manning Academy at 6:30 p.m. at the Sumter Civic Center.
The Heathwood Hall and Ben Lippen boys are in action on Saturday. Heathwood Hall (13-10) plays at home on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Hilton Head Prep. Ben Lippen (16-6) travels to face Pinewood Prep at 5:30 p.m.
The 3A girls quarterfinals begin on Feb. 25 with the boys quarterfinals on Feb. 26.
Cardinal Newman beat Hammond in the boys championship game last season, and the Midlands rivals could clash again for the top prize.
