Baxter: A look at the preseason softball polls

We gave you a peek at the top softball players from around the state last week. Today, we take a look at the preseason softball polls. The Midlands has representation, but the strength in this sport continues to be from outside the Columbia area.

In the Class 4A, Blythewood is the Midlands’ contribution to the Top 10. Junior middle infielder/pitcher Katie Chappell is a force for the Bengals and has committed to College of Charleston. Last year, the Bengals lost in the district championship to Byrnes.

Class 4AAAA

1. Summerville; 2. Mauldin; 3. Byrnes; 4. Blythewood; 5. Boiling Springs; 6. Clover; 7. Stratford; 8. North Augusta; 9. Ashley Ridge; 10. Bluffton

In Class 3A, Chapin and Gilbert are the Midlands teams to watch. Chapin returns a strong lineup featuring sophomore shortstop Brooke Burns, who has committed to North Carolina. Gilbert will be led by senior Gabby Keisler, a 2013 All-State selection who has signed with Erskine.

Class 3AAA

1. Hartsville; 2. Seneca; 3. Union County; 4. Chapin; 5. Palmetto; 6. Gilbert; 7. Chapman; 8. Midland Valley; 9. St. James; 10. Blue Ridge

There are no Midlands teams in the Class 2A or Class A polls.

Class 2AA

1. Crescent; 2. Waccamaw; 3. Dillon; 4. Buford; 5. Chesterfield; 6. Mid-Carolina; 7. Landrum; 8. Andrews; 9. Chesnee; 10. Silver Bluff

Class 1A

1. East Clarendon; 2. Dixie; 3. Latta; 4. Johnsonville; 5. Lewisville; 6. Green Sea-Floyds; 7. McBee; 8. Fox Creek; 9. Christ Church; 10. Ware Shoals
