Columbia provided the bulk of the Midlands highlights at the Class 2A traditional state wrestling tournament in Anderson.
The Capitals led all area teams in the teams standings, finishing 13th with 27 points. Individually, Columbia had two of the four Midlands place finishers.
Louis Wilson capped a 46-2 season with a second-place finish at 160 pounds. Wilson pinned Lake City’s Jermaine Brown in the quarterfinals and defeated Michael Buck of Edisto, 4-0, in the semifinals before coming up bitterly short, 8-7, against Taquan Long of Loris in the final. It is the second year in a row that Wilson's had to settle for silver at state. He’ll have one more try to find gold next season.
Columbia teammate Justin Frazier (41-7) managed a fourth-place showing at 195.
Never miss a local story.
Otherwise, North Central’s Mason Gomez (40-9) was a bronze medal winner at 113 and Eau Claire’s Kareen Jones took fourth place at 182.
