A'ja Wilson named Naismith Trophy winner

The Heathwood Hall star is the first South Carolina female to earn the prestigious national player of the year award presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

The honors keep coming for Heathwood Hall star A’ja Wilson.

Six days after leading the Highlanders to their first SCISA Class 3A championship with a 37-point, 14-rebound, eight-block performance in a dramatic overtime win over Northwood Academy, the 6-foot-4 All-America senior forward was named the Naismith Trophy female high school player of the year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Wilson is the first girls basketball player from South Carolina to receive the prestigious award. The only other player from the Palmetto State so honored was Latta’s Raymond Felton in 2002.

For the record, Wilson closed her five-year Highlanders career with 2,943 points, 1658 rebounds, 303 assists, 403 steals and 512 blocks in 119 games. Her career averages include 24.7 points, 13.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.4 steals and 4.3 blocks.

Wilson will play in the McDonald’s All-America Games on Chicago in April, and likely will not announce her college choice until after her visit to the Windy City.
