Swansea sends a mixed-bag team to the field in 2014. Five starters return, but coach Marty Mack will be working with a very young team.
“We have the potential to swing the bat and score some runs, but we’re going to have to work through some growing pains, especially early in the season.” Said Mack, whose team finished 12-8, 5-5 in Region 5-3A.
“I think our pitching will allow us to compete, but we must make the routine plays on defense and not give teams extra outs.”
Senior Cara Lucas (3B) and junior Morgan Strickland (SS) are the only upperclassmen in the lineup. Sophomores Celia Goodwin (2B), Ki’Ana Speights (CF) and Madison Myers (1B) are the other returning starters.
The list of promising newcomers includes eighth-grade pitch Bri Rogers and freshman catcher and freshmen outfielders Laura Tomberlin and Brooke Rivers.
Swansea opens the regular season at home against Pelion on March 11.
