Cardinal Newman upheld SCISA honor by pulling off an impressive soccer sweep Tuesday at Lexington. Both CN teams came away with 2-1 wins against two highly regarded Wildcat sides.
Will Eudy’s defending Class 3A SCISA champion Cardinals (6-3-2) received goals by Ben Mizeur and Jack Herbkersman, the latter scoring the game-winner early in the second half.
Eudy said his team has had issues with adjusting to life without All-America star Koty Millard.
“We’re still trying to figure out how to play without Koty on the field, but we’re getting there,” said the CN coach. “We’ve been playing better lately, but the real goal is to be playing our best in May.”
Never miss a local story.
Lexington scored late in the match to make things interesting if nothing else. The Wildcats, ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 4A poll, have now dropped two straight one-goal matches after starting the season with seven straight wins.
The CN girls improved to 2-2-1 with its biggest win of the season. Ayden Boatwright tallied both Cardinal goals. The Wildcats, who are also fifth in the latest 4A ranking, dropped to 4-2. McKenzie Curry scored for Lexington.
