Second-year Westwood High had a significant sports day on Tuesday – sweeping all four varsity team-sports games on a single day for the first time in school history. All of the contests were against Lower Richland and all marked the first Region 4-3A wins for the respective Redhawk teams this season.
The girls soccer team was a 5-0 winner. Freshman Jayla Lewis had two scores for the Redhawks, while Emma Howe, Khyra Reese and Kaylah Wilson tallied the other goals.
The boys soccer team rolled by a 13-0 margin as Quintion Kleinert (4), Tyler Johnson (3), Felin Mejia (2) and Daevawn McCaskall (2) had multiple-goal performances. Gurbir Mahli and Adrian Brown accounted for the other scores.
The Redhawks softball team pulled out a wild, 24-23 win over the Diamond Hornets for the first win in program history. Westwood, in fact, spotted LR a 10-0 lead in the first inning before storming back to pull it out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shontera Boyd had a key, two-out hit in the final frame and eventually came in to score the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Westwood baseball also scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh winning for a 4-3 decision – the first-ever region win for the program. Ray Branson was the winning pitcher and he also delivered the game-winning hit with an infield single that plated Matt Kiely.
