Three Midlands sides make ASI cut

Defending Airport Select Invitational boys soccer tournament champion Cardinal Newman, Hammond and Dutch Fork advance to Sunday's semifinal matches at 10 a.m. The championship match is at 2 p.m.

Cardinal Newman, Hammond and Dutch Fork have advanced to the semifinal round of the Airport Select Invitational boys soccer tournament.

Defending ASI champion Cardinal Newman faces Mauldin in one semifinal match, while Hammond and Dutch Fork square off in the other final-four contest. Both semifinal matches start at 10 a.m. The winners play for the tournament title at 2 p.m. at Airport’s Eagle Stadium.

Cardinal Newman, which has never lost a ACI outing, qualified for the final four by going 2-0-1 in Flight A, the lone blemish being a 1-1 tie on Friday against Emerald. The defending SCISA champion Cardinals (8-4-3) opened the tourney with a 5-0 win over Palmetto Athletic Club on Thursday and followed with a 3-1 win against host Airport in their early Friday match. Mauldin advanced with a 3-0 showing in Flight B.

Hammond (8-1) made the cut by going 3-0 in Flight C and Dutch Fork (10-6) moved on with a 3-0 grade in Flight D. Hammond is, by far, the highest scoring team in the tournament with 21 goals, and the defense has yet to surrender a goal.
