Dreher pulls off Palmetto Cup upset

The unranked Blue Devils stun Class 4A No. 6 Blythewood, 2-1, in first match of the 22nd annual boys soccer festival at Brookland-Cayce.

Dreher pulled off a major upset in the first round of the Palmetto Cup on Monday at Brookland-Cayce.

The Class 3A unranked Blue Devils defeated 4A No. 6 Blythewood 2-1 on a goal by Winter Sharpe in the 61st minute. Dreher (8-6) takes on Gaffney in second-round action at 2 p.m.. Blythewood (14-3) saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end, and has a tough second-round match on tap against top-ranked Wando at noon.

There was no score in the first half of the tournament opener. Dreher got on the board first in the 49th minute on a goal by Sean O’Neill. Sharpe was credited with an assist. Blythewood evened the count two minutes later on a goal by Dillon Garcia.

In other first-round matches, Irmo blanked Wade Hampton 4-0, Lexington breezed by Wilson 8-1, Brookland-Cayce thumped Chester 13-0, Wando blasted Gaffney 8-1 and Farragut defeated Fort Mill, 4-1, in the first-round finale.

Irmo (13-2) received two goals apiece from Preston Graczyk and Tyler Johnston. The Yellow Jackets take on Brookland-Cayce in the second round at 8 p.m.

Adam Hicks tallied four goals and Bryson Tindal added two in Lexington’s easy win. The Wildcats (13-3) face Fort Mill in the second round at 6 p.m.

Francisco Ponce-Cruz led B-C's rout with three goals and had two-goal support from Ilyass Balota, Tyler Brazell, David Koprowski and Joel Salcedo. Dominik Byars had three assists for the 14-2 Bearcats.
