The stretch run in Region 5-4A baseball and softball seasons begins this week.
Lexington has the inside track to the region championship. In fact, the Wildcats can clinch the pennant with a Tuesday win over Dutch Fork. If DF loses, it needs a win later in the week against North Augusta (Thursday) to secure second place and a first-round state playoff home game. White Knoll enters the final week in the midst of a mad scramble with North Augusta and South Aiken for a postseason invitations. The Timberwolves have a key outing on Monday against South Aiken. With Lexington looming on Friday, the T-Wolves seemingly are in a must win situation tonight.
Lexington 7-1, Dutch Fork 5-2, Aiken 4-4, White Knoll 3-5, North Augusta 2-5, South Aiken 1-5.
There is much to be determined this week. Lexington has a one-game lead and a tie-breaker edge over second-place Dutch Fork thanks to a region sweep against the Silver Foxes. The Wildcats, obviously, have the edge in the pennant race. Dutch Fork may or may not have to beat North Augusta in its season finale on Friday to assure a second-place finish, depending on the outcome of NA’s game against Lexington on Thursday. White Knoll’s Tuesday game at South Aiken likely will determine the playoff fate of both teams.
Lexington 7-1, Dutch Fork 7-2, North Augusta 4-3, South Aiken 3-5, White Knoll 3-5, Aiken 0-8.
