Stretch run: Region 4-4A

Blythewood travels to Richland Northeast Tuesday for a pennant showdown.

Region 4-4A baseball is in a unique position. The varsity season is on point, without a number of weather-relate make-up dates cramming the final week of the regular season. The stretch run includes the normal compliment of Tuesday and Friday games.

It’s not quite as tidy in softball. The Richland Northeast vs. Spring Valley and Irmo vs. Ridge View games are on Monday.

Richland Northeast hosts Blythewood in a first-place showdown on Tuesday. Blythewood can clinch no worse than a tie for the pennant with a win. A Cavaliers win likely creates a three-way tie for first with one game to go. If, that is Lugoff-Elgin, gets by Ridge View on Tuesday. RV needs one win to secure a playoff spot, and that will be a challenge. After the Blazers play at Lugoff-Elgin, they travel to Blythewood on Friday. The loser of Tuesday’s Irmo vs. Spring Valley game is eliminated from postseason consideration.

Blythewood 6-2, Lugoff-Elgin 5-3, Richland NE 5-3, Ridge View 4-4, Irmo 2-6, Spring Valley 2-6.

The top two playoff seeds are set – Blythewood is No. 1 with Lugoff-Elgin at No. 2. Technically, every other team is in the playoff mix, but RNE is just one loss away from elimination. Spring Valley can lock down the No. 3 seed with a Tuesday win over Irmo. That would leave the fourth and final postseason spot open to the Irmo-RV winner on Monday.

Blythewood 8-0, Lugoff-Elgin 6-2, Spring Valley 3-4, Irmo 3-4, Ridge View 2-5, Richland NE 0-7.
