Last chance for 4A Midlands teams

Seven area baseball and softball teams need doubleheader sweeps on the road tonight to stay alive in the state playoffs.

Seven Midlands Class 4A baseball and softball teams need two road wins tonight to secure district championships and move on to the Elite Eight phase of the state playoffs.

In baseball, defending champion Lexington is at Goose Creek (District 5), Blythewood is at Fort Mill (District 2) and Richland Northeast is at Northwestern (District 3). The Midlands has never failed to advance at least one team to the next round since 4A adopted the district playoff format in 2003.

In softball, Blythewood is at Clover (District 2), Lugoff-Elgin is at Northwestern (District 3), Lexington is at Wando (District 5) and Spring Valley is at Summerville (District 6). The last time Midlands teams came up empty in the districts was in 2007.
