Two-time defending state champion A.C. Flora begins the next phase of its latest title quest on Monday at Falcon Field against Eastside in the first round of the Class 3A Upper State championship tournament.
Elsewhere, Gilbert’s baseball and softball teams are off to Hartsville tonight for Lower State openers and Lexington is facing an elimination game at Wando in the 4A Lower State tourney.
Flora (22-3) was pushed to the limit on Friday by Emerald, but found a way to secure its third straight district championship with a 7-6 win in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.
Defending state champion Lexington (20-9) is in a familiar position after losing 7-0 to Sumter in the Lower State opener. The Wildcats dropped its district opener, as well, but rallied for four straight wins to advance to the Elite Eight.
Never miss a local story.
Gilbert’s teams both went 3-0 in district play and breezed in the respective championship games on Friday. The Indians are 23-2 to date in baseball, 25-4 in baseball. Gilbert is looking to get to the state championship series for the first time in 3A and for the fourth time under coach Ashley Burnett since 2004. The Tribe softball team has not advance to the state finals since 1994.
