Baxter’s Blitz: Keenan football aiming to start winning tradition

Keenan Raiders are the No. 10 team in Jim Baxter’s spring list of Class 2A football teams

THE KEENAN RAIDERS are No. 10 in my Class 2A spring top 10 list.

The Raiders return a wealth of talent. Coach Quinn McCollum is hungry to establish a winning tradition. They looked strong this spring and will cause problems for a lot of opponents.

They return athlete Deion Trezevant at quarterback, and there is depth at the position for the first time in a long while. Transfer junior D’Marco Zeigler is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound signal caller who also could start. If he does, Trezevant can be a threat at wide receiver.

Regardless of who gets the starting job, they will have a lot of weapons on offense. When he throws, he will be going to senior Rod Jones and junior Jalon Wilson. Ken Gather is a multi-spot player who will be dangerous. Jonathan Cato will fill in at fullback.

In the trenches, the Raiders are strong. Seniors Justice Worley and Nick Stewart are joined by junior Ronald Corley III to anchor the offensive front.

Senior Tarik Williams, Cato, and juniors Thaddeus Peterson and James Bass give strength at defensive ends.

At linebacker, senior Richard Lawhorn lines up outside, and the middle is anchored by junior Tyrieck Davis-Newton and sophomore Sanchez Lorick. Williams, Cato, Peterson and Corley can all play linebacker as well.

In the secondary, Gather, along with Rod Jones and junior Thurman Trapp, will lead the charge.
