The Columbia Capitols will be taking the field under new direction from first year head coach Willie Offord for the 2014 campaign. Last season, the Caps went 4-8 with a second round playoff loss to Cheraw. This season, the new coach knows they have a tall task to get the program back to its winning ways.
“We are a very inexperienced and young football team,” said Offord. “We are rebuilding a tradition rich program in our area and we will accept the challenging process one step at a time week to week.”
The offense will have a new look this year, running the flexbone and coach Offord has five returning starters to help get it rolling.
In the offensive skills positions, senior running back Kimone Shaw returns along with junior running back Quin Carolina. Only one wide out returns in senior Wayne Brown.
Up front, senior Jamel Ferrell and junior Corey Brown return to anchor the line.
Newcomers that will need to step up on offense will be sophomore quarterback Mike Williams, sophomore wide receiver Marquise McCoy, and sophomore center Darryl Turner.
As with many 2A football teams, some guys will see time on both sides of the football so senior Wayne Brown will line up at defensive end. Joining him up front will be senior Tyran Dixon at tackle.
Three linebackers return to the lineup led by senior Louis Wilson. He is joined by senior James Kinlaw and senior Deon Westin.
The Caps will face a tough out of conference schedule with Chapin, River Bluff, Dreher, and A.C. Flora.
