QUESTION: What’s the best way to get my son recruited? We’ve done the services and sent out tape and have gotten a lot of mail but no offers yet.
ANSWER This is a question that can’t be answered in this short column, but here’s a summary. First of all, “mail” is just that: mail. Everyone that fills out questionnaires gets mail from schools. As for recruiting services, it’s no secret that I’m against paying a service that tells you they can help you get recruited. Now, as for the offer; if your son is a senior and has not received an offer by now, it is highly unlikely he will get one. He could be a player that the schools have as a backup in case one of their top targets falls or would rather have him walk on. He may be option “C,” and A and B end up qualifying and committing. It’s very difficult to tell if the recruiters are being honest with you or not, but ask them where you sit on the target board for his position. And start looking at other options, such as Division II and Division III schools.
QUESTION You mentioned earlier this season that Tom Knotts was building the next dynasty at Dutch Fork. Will they add to that with a win over Hillcrest this weekend?
ANSWER What I said was, if Knotts stays at Dutch Fork, they could be the next dynasty. It appears that he’s on that track. Granted, when you look at some of the storied programs around the state – such as Gaffney and Byrnes, who have built dynasties – Dutch Fork has a long way to go in terms of championships. But they are certainly a dynasty for the decade, having played in three consecutive 4A Division I title games and winning one with a chance at a second this weekend. As for this weekend’s matchup, the Foxes will be well prepared for the opponent. I think their ground game is powerful and can be successful against an athletic Hillcrest team. I also think the short passing game can hurt the Rams in space. I look for the Dutch Fork defensive front to win this game for the Foxes. Hillcrest’s offense is potent and dangerous but sputters when pressured. The Foxes proved last week against Byrnes that they can get to the quarterback. I look for a Dutch Fork win in this game.
