Midlands reps Thomas Bates of Mid-Carolina and Matt Taylor of Gilbert came away with pole vault medals at the Class 2A state boys track and field championship meet on May 3 at Harry Parone Stadium.
Bates was second behind three-time champion Jaquon Pegues of Cheraw with a vault of 15 feet, while Taylor was third at 13 feet. Taylor was second behind the Braves star in 2007, while Bates did not place a year ago because he failed to clear the minimum height.
Pegues has a great shot at become South Carolina’s first-ever, four-time state pole vault champion next spring. He has been the best vaulter in the field, regardless of classification, for the past three seasons. His 13-10 was tops among all vaulters when he was an eighth-grader in 2006, he led the way at 15-0 a year ago and his 16-0 this season was “best in year” as well. He has set unofficial 2A records in each of the last three state meets.
