Swansea sophomore Benjamin Willard won the 103-pound championship at the Blue Devil Invitational wrestling tournament last weekend, and teammate Lequan Jones finished third in the heavyweight division.
Willard, a second-place state finisher last season and the current top-ranked man at his weight in Class 3A, went 4-0 at the Dreher event to up his season record to 20-1. He previously secured tournament titles at Dutch Fork and at the Taco Bell Invitational at Spring Valley. Williard was at his imperious best at Dreher with three pins and a major decision against Chris Barrett of Pickens in the BDI title bout.
Jones, meanwhile, showed plenty of resilience after losing a first-round match to Irmo’s Jimmy Carson. He went on to win five straight matches in the consolation bracket, securing third place with win over Sergio Smith of Crescent.
