A.C. Flora at Dillon
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: A.C. Flora will be facing traditional powerhouse Dillon for the first time in its first-ever Week 0 debut. The Falcons, coming off a 5-6 campaign, are facing a massive rebuilding task up front of both sides of the ball ... The season opener will give an indication of how much coach Robin Bacon is going to open up the offense this season with junior quarterback Drew Desmond back for his second season at the key offensive position and an influx a new receivers. It will also be interesting to see how Bacon employs veteran Carlos McCoy as a receiver and a running back, and how junior Terry Cherry does in his debut as the prime running back after an outstanding rookie season at safety on defense in 2007 … The Falcons have lost four straight openers and are 15-23 since 1970 in season debut games … Dillon, on the other hand, has been money in the bank in season openers since Jackie Hayes took over the program in 1992 – winning 15 of 16 debuts. The Wildcats, who moved down to Class 2A in 2006, are 172-46-0 under Hayes, who is a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Dillon has won at least 10 games for seven straight seasons and 14 times in 16 tries under Hayes. The only thing missing is a state championship. The problem the past two seasons has been the failure to solve Cheraw in the Class 2A playoffs. The Wildcats fell to the title-bound Braves in the Lower State championship game in 2006, and in the third round last season … With 15 starters returning, including the entire offensive line and the top three tacklers on defense, Dillon should make a serious run at its first state championship since 1947.
