With the loss of just one starter from a 14-3 team, the Chapin girls tennis team enters the new season and a new region with high expectations. The Eagles finished second to Midlands power Brookland-Cayce in Region 4-3A last fall, but moves into a new operational home with A.C. Flora, Lugoff-Elgin, Fairfield Central, Chester and Lower Richland this spring.
“We have good depth with 14 letter winners returning,” said veteran coach John Rodgers. “This is a very experienced team.”
At the top of the list are sophomore Taylor Matthews and senior Julia McLaurin. Matthews went 11-6 last season while making the challenging jump from No. 5 singles to the No. 1 spot in the lineup. McLaurin finished with a 12-5 record at No. 2 singles.
Juniors Jordan Broadway and Emilee Gray will move up one spot in the lineup to cover for the graduation loss of No. 3 singles starter Shannon Kelly. Broadway and Gray both posted 15-2 record last season at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Sophomore Jenna Taylor, who started at No. 2 doubles a year ago, has moved up to No. 5 singles.
Never miss a local story.
Senior Beth Anne Lamar, who teamed with Taylor to post a 13-2 record last season, will have a new partner at No. 2 doubles. The candidates include senior Kelsey McCawley and juniors Jayde Corley, Abby Elam and Kayla Gearhart.
