Laurence Manning: The Swampcats (3-3) have come back to earth after getting off to a 3-0 start against a trio of SCISA Class 2A foes. LMA has since dropped three in a row to Augusta Christian (13-9), Orangeburg Prep (28-27) and Pinewood Prep (13-0). The two most recent setback have been SCISA Region 2-3A affairs that put the Swampcats’ playoff hopes in jeopardy.
Heathwood Hall notes: The Highlanders have been living on the edge for most of the 2008 season, playing in five straight games that could have gone either way. Last week, HH came up short in a 35-31 overtime loss to powerhouse Augusta Christian in Georgia … The Highlanders went ahead on a field goal by Cole Fowble in the first OT rotation, but the host Lions countered with a decisive, 7-yard scoring run by senior star William Banks … Mac Whalen had 76 yards rushing and found the range on 22 of 29 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Davis Ray finished with six catches for 100 yards and two TDs, while Morgan Whalen had four receptions for 74 yards and one score … Mac Whalen leads the team in rushing, passing and scoring. He is 109 for 713 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, while going 106-for-175 for 1462 yards and 13 TDs in the passing department. Morgan Whalen is among the top receivers in the state with 44 catches for 711 yards and five scores. Ray has 27 catches for 473 yards and six tallies … Redding Kingery and Walker Sojourner are at the top of the hit list in defense with 62 and 60 tackles, respectively. Jamey Mears has 50 tackles and a team high three sacks. Ray’s contribution also includes four interceptions … Senior Evan Peterson was the defensive star vs. AC with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack.
Series history: The series has been a tight one with the Highlanders taking a 5-4 lead last year with a 41-7 win.
