Spring Valley came away with two Top 10 finishes at the Class 4A state swimming meet Saturday at Rock Hill.
The Vikings girls turned in a solid 263-point, fourth-place performance, which was especially impressive considering the graduation hits the team took after last season’s runner-up finish. The SV boys returned to the Top 10 for the first time since 2004, ringing up 157.5 points on the way to an eighth-place finish.
Sarah Boyle came away with three medals to headline the Spring Valley story. Boyle picked up a silver medal in the 100 butterfly, teamed up with Sarah Long, Caroline Spinek and Margaret Hoynes for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay and joined forces with Hoynes, Genevieve Lyke and Katie Voss for a third-place finish in the 400 free relay.
The rest of the SV girls scoring came on individual efforts. Hoynes was fifth in the 100 free, Spinek was fifth in the butterfly and eighth in the 200 individual medley, Lyke was ninth in the 200 free and 10th in the 500 free and Voss was 12th in the two freestyle sprints – the 50 and 100.
Never miss a local story.
Jonathan Boland and Hunter Bagnal contributed points to the boys total in four different events. Boland was ninth in the 500 free and 14th in the 200 free, while Bagnal was sixth in the butterfly and ninth in the 100 free. Boland and Bagnal also contributed on the seventh-place medley relay team and the eight-place 400 free relay team.
