Brookland-Cayce’s youthful girls cross country team took positive steps in 2008, and the prospects are good for even more gains over the next few seasons.
B-C slipped a little at the Class 3A state meet, finishing 19th behind Region 5-3A rivals South Aiken and Airport. The Bearcats were fifth at the Lower State qualifying meet the week prior to state, one spot behind region champion South Aiken and one spot ahead of neighboring Airport.
Freshman Noel McDaniel was B-C’s No. 1 runner this season. McDaniel paced the team at state, finishing 68th with a time of 21:43, and she was 14th at the LS qualifier in 21:39.
The rest of the varsity lineup is expected to return next season, including junior Rebecca Jones, freshmen Brittany Jones, Carlyn Fralick, Maria Haywood and Ashleigh Nettles and eighth-grader Emma Young.
Young (87th, 22:39), Brittany Jones (111th, 23:19), Rebecca Jones (117th, 23:42) and Fralick (123rd, 23:58) were the other B-C scoring runners at state.
The Bearcats girls have qualified for state five times in the last seven seasons.
