In the fall of 2008, the Brookland-Cayce Bearcat Volleyball Team experienced a successful season. A young team, the Bearcats received an early season ranking of 18 among the states 3-A volleyball programs. After a slow start winning only one match out of the first seven, the Bearcats discovered winning ways again at the onset of region competition. Losing only two matches, both against region champion South Aiken, the Bearcats locked up a second place finish. To solidify second place, the Bearcats had to defeat a tough defensive region competitor, the Airport Eagles, on Senior Night (October 16) in the Den. The Bearcats played nineteen matches and two tournaments.
At the White Knoll tournament on September 20, the Bearcats lacked consistent play, but finished the day with a great defeat against Holly Hill. Senior setter Mackenzie Cleland was named to the White Knoll All-Tournament Team.
At the Chapin Invitational on October 11, the Bearcats wrapped up a busy day by bringing home the trophy for first place in the Silver Division. Junior power hitter Alex White was named to the Chapin All-Tournament Team.
After regular season play, the Bearcats hosted Battery Creek for the first round of the State Play-offs. After soundly defeating Battery Creek, the Bearcats then traveled to Myrtle Beach for the second round. The Bearcats won the second round in four games. The third round was played at Camden led by senior power hitter Melissa Kearse. The Bulldogs proved too much for the Bearcats and the Bearcats ended the season with a 27-25 loss in the fourth game. The loss concluded the 2008 season with an overall record of 12-10, 8-2 (region) and 2-1 (play-offs).
Never miss a local story.
Mackenzie Cleland (senior setter) and Kristen Hutchins (power hitter) were selected to the All-Region Team.
The Bearcats were a well-rounded team this year consisting of 5 seniors (Anna Brown-off-side hitter, Mackenzie Cleland-setter, Ashley Hinson-power hitter, Kristen Hutchins-power hitter and Candyce Slice-off-side hitter). Our four-year veterans provided leadership and experience invaluable to the Bearcat’s success.
Juniors Alley Greer (middle hitter) and Alex White (power hitter) contributed incredible blocking in the middle as well as true power from the middle and left side hitting positions. Ashlyn Hicks, junior libero, consistently fed the setter with great passes to initiate the offensive attack. With great serves and defensive play, juniors Ashlan Diaz and Katherine Helms regularly worked in the back court. Providing additional back-up and great play were Gabby Branche (junior power hitter), sophomores Jessica Godard (power hitter), Stephanie Hendrix and Morgen Stroud (defensive specialists) and Kacie Silver (middle hitter). As a freshman, Ebony McBride became starting middle blocker for the Bearcats and contributed consistently with strong blocks and well-placed hits.
The Bearcats would like to recognize Carlee Smith, Sarah Foy, Asia Benn and Keeley Griggs for managing and keeping score. A special thanks to our line judges who included several parents as well as John Greer and Asia Benn.
