Sumter bids farewell to seven seniors who helped the Gamecocks volleyball program keep alive a long string of success in region competition.
The 2008 team secured the Region 6-4A championship – the fourth in a row for Warren Coker’s solid program. The Gamecocks breezed through the region campaign with a 10-0 record, and are 32-2 in conference matters since the run began ion 2005.
“We had a successful season, but one that ended to quickly,” said Coker, referring to Sumter’s first-round playoff loss to North Augusta.
“I am very proud of these young ladies for winning their fourth consecutive region title. We have some talented young ladies that will return to us next year, but we’ll have our work cut out for us with the loss of seven seniors. I do feel that we can have another good run next year.”
Sumter’s departing seniors include Kelly Krouse, Jessy Hansen, Heather Chilcutt, Courtney Ward, Morgan Mixon, Brittany Tolleson and Allegra Thompson.
Hansen led the team with 166 kills, and also contributed 103 blocks, 24 assists and 99 digs. Krouse had 41 kills and 65 digs. Chilcutt had 108 kills, 42 blocks and 55 digs. Thompson, the team Libero, had an impressive 373 digs. Ward had 84 kills.
Sophomore setter Sutton Watson and junior Lauren Sorrells were key contributors. Watson had 383 assists, 59 kills and 143 digs. Sorrells had 44 kills, 78 assists and 50 digs.
