Cardinal Newman had to settle for second place at irs own Christmas Classic wrestling tournament last weekend. A late run of titles in the upper weights allowed Gilbert to edge the Cardinals 229-225.5 in the final team standings.
“We had some key guys out of the lineup but didn’t wrestle poorly; it was what is was,” mused CN coach Eric Goff, whose team was the defending tournament champion.
Freshman Cole McCarter (103), junior Alex Geurin (130) and freshman Joey DeAngelis (152) emerged as the CN individual champions. All went 3-0 on the way to first place. DeAngelis was named the outstanding wrestler between the weights of 145 and 285.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was a loss by three-time SCISA champion Talley Lattimore to Gilbert’s Zack Kennedy in the 135-pound title bout. The other critical factor in the team race was all four CN entries in the consolation finals lost.
Hunter Richardson (112) and Chris Palevich (145) emerged with runner-up honors.
