Undefeated Orangeburg-Wilkinson overcame a big halftime deficit to hand Irmo a 51-50 loss Tuesday in the Region 5-4A girls basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday.
The Buins (5-0, 1-0) trailed 23-9 at the break, but pulled within 38-32 of the host Yellow Jackets with a 23-15 move in the third quarter. O-W then pulled away in the final three minutes of the game behind the play of 6-2 senior center Erika Sumter, who scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half.
Sumter was the difference with the game on the line, scoring 10 of O-W’s final 11 points of the game on power moves in the low post. Her two free throws with 20 seconds to go gave the Bruins a 51-47 lead, 33 seconds after her last field goal put the Bruins in front for good, 48-47.
Brooke McCants led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points. Irmo (4-3, 0-1) had dropped three of its last four games after opening the season by winning the Claw Classic preseason tournament championship at Chapin for the second year in a row.
