The Lexington boys and Dutch Fork girls basketball teams put their first-place standing on the line when Region 5-4A play resumes on Tuesday.
Fresh from a key 50-44 win over archrival Irmo last Friday, Lexington (13-2, 4-0) currently enjoys a one-game lead over North Augusta and two-game advantages on Dutch Fork Irmo, Richland Northeast and Aiken. Bailey Harris’ squad hosts a Dutch Fork team (6-5, 2-2) that features high-scoring E.J. Mills.
The Wildcats have won five in a row since losing to Martinsburg (W.V.) is the first round of the Oceanfront Holiday Classic in Hinton Head.
Last week’s players of the week were Justin Mills (offense), Tradd Hunter (defense) and Adrian Wigfall and Michael Spires shared the sixth-man award. Mills tallied 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field vs. Orangeburg-Wilkinson, and he contributed seven points and seven rebounds in the big win against Irmo. Hunter grabbed 16 boards in the Irmo game, and five rebounds, five steals and six steals vs. O-W. Wigfall and Spires were both honored for the critical contributions off the bench in the Irmo game. Wigfall had eight points and six assists, while Spires had 12 points and three assists.
Never miss a local story.
The other key game on the boys side is Richland Northeast at North Augusta. The Cavaliers (12-5, 2-2) can do no worse than gain a share of second place with a win over the always scrappy Yellow Jackets. RNE’s Daris Crosby has a 12.5 scoring averaging in region play to date and Larry Sumter stands at 10.2 ppg.
Dutch Fork’s girls bring the only unbeaten conference record to Lexington. The Silver Foxes (8-3, 4-0) have received balanced contributions from senior Devin Pearson 14.3 ppg), sophomore Shyianne Oakman (10.8 ppg), eighth-grader Alaina Coates (10.3 ppg) and senior Erin Houston (8.3 ppg) in region play to date.
