Gilbert and Columbia took part in the Greenwood Invitational last weekend. The Indians finished in sixth place with 194 point, while the Capitals were 12th with 91 points.
The big individual story was the successful title run at 171 pounds by Gilbert's Jeff Hoover, who is now 3-for-3 in tournament championship outing this season. Teammates Austin Amick (112) and Matt Risinger (130) also advanced to the championship round, but had to settle for a silver medals. Otherwise, Matt Chapman claimed consolation honors at 160, while David Amick (125), Jon Sullivan (160) and Zac Watkins (189) all finished fourth in their respective divisions.
Columbia had two place finishers. Trey Leonard was the consolation champion at 171 and Randy Medina was fourth at 112. Leonard bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to Hoover to secure third place. Also, junior Jerry Johnson finished fifth at 189 and freshman Trey Harper was sixth at 135.
“We've lost two starters for different reasons and that has hurt our dual record, but the guys are working extremely hard and we have a great core in place,” said Columbia coach Joseph Lovier. “I'm very proud of their effort this year.”
