Dreher’s basketball teams are off to a fast start in Region 5-3A action. The Blue Devils pulled off a Tuesday sweep of visiting Midland Valley on Tuesday night – the girls toppled the Mustangs 57-42, and the boys added a 63-54 win in the nightcap.
Dreher’s girls (2-0 in region play) currently shares first place with Brookland-Cayce and Airport, while the Blue Devils share first place with Swansea in the boys standings.
Teguila McNeal and Shekiena Smith combined for 35 points for the Dreher girls. McNeal tallied a game-high 18 points, while Smith added 17. In the boys game, Quayshaun Hawkins led a parade of double-digit scoring with 17 points, followed by Dominic Boyd (14), Chris Brown (13) and Dominique Nathaniel (11).
Brookland-Cayce’s girls stand at 4-9 overall, but a fourth-quarter rally netted the Bearcats a 57-47 win at South Aiken and a 2-0 region record. B-C trailed after three quarters were in the books, but went on a decisive 20-6 surge over the final eight minutes. Sophomorte Asia Benn led the way with 15 points, and senior Shanique Brown chipped in with 12. Brown has 32 points in the two region games.
Airport (6-9 overall) dumped Swansea 56-42 to keep pace with Dreher and B-C in the early going. Jessica Ellison continued her impressive production with 20 points, and has 36 in the two region outings. Taniqua Canzater backed Ellison with 13 points.
Swansea’s boys altered the equation in the nightcap, downing the visiting Eagles 62-57. Senior Damien Johnson paced the Tigers (10-5) with 19 points, senior center Benton Williams rang up 12 points and Avery Smith added seven to the cause.
