The Gamecocks Duals wrestling event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sumter High. The 10-team field features the host Gamecocks, Camden, Blythewood, Lake City, Myrtle Beach, Hartsville, Loris, Socastee, Westside and Greenville, Ten.
The highest ranked team is Loris, which is No. 1 on Class 2A in the latest scmat.com poll. The Lions from Horry County have a solid lineup featuring Colloyd Jackson (No. 1 at 145, Class 2A-1A), Maurice Morris (No. 1 at 171) and Emmanuel Williams (No. 2 at 285). Jackson and Morris at defending state 2A-1A champions.
Other top-ranked wrestlers in the field include Westside’s Zack McCormick (No. 1 at 152, 4A), Camden’s Will Long (No. 1 at 140, 3A) and Horus Madrid (No. 2 at 130), Lake City’s Tarrence Williams (No. 1 at 171, 3A), and Myrtle Beach’s Caleb Desjardins (No. 1 at 189, 3A). McCormick is a three-time state qualifier, and a state champion at 145 last year.
Sumter opened the January portion of the schedule with an impressive showing at the Ram Rumble – a large duals meet on Jan. 2 at Chesterfield. The Gamecocks went 8-1, losing only to the host Rams in the championship bout, 39-28.

Five Sumter wrestlers went unbeaten at the marathon event. Heavyweight Mike Miller was 9-0 with five pins, Trevor Jahnke was 9-0 at 215 with four pins, Shawn Armstrong was 9-0 with four pins and one technical fall at 189, Josh Sullivan was 9-0 with five pins at 152 and 160 and Madison Devine was 9-0 with five pins at 130 and 135.
Eric Portee (8-1 with three pins at 160 and 171), Andrew Lovice (7-1 five pins and one TF at 140 and 145), Josh Anderson (7-2 with five pins at 125), Hayden Raabe (7-2 at 145 and 152) and Peter Hackett (6-3 with four pins at 103) also had fine performances.
Sumter brings a 19-5 record to Saturday’s fray.
