Hunter-Kinard-Tyler pays a rare regular season visit to Columbia on Tuesday. The Trojans from Neeses in Orangeburg County will be at C.A. Johnson for a Region 4-1A basketball doubleheader.
Leon Brunson, the third boys coach at H-K-T in the past three seasons, has the Trojans off to a 11-5 overall start and in first place in the region race at 6-0. H-K-T took over sole possession of the top spot in the region with a 63-61 win over North on Jan. 13.
C.A. Johnson recently ended a two-game losing streak with a 52-37 win over Blackville-Hilda. The Green Hornets (8-8, 4-2) must win to avoid falling three games behind the front-running Trojans as the first-half of the 4-1A campaign comes to a close.
The defending Upper State champion H-K-T girls team, ranked No. 1 in the coaches preseason poll, is off to an 11-3 start and is 6-0 in region matters with a one-game lead over Williston-Elko and Blackville-Hilda.
Melinda Brimfield and Shalika Smalls lead a Trojans team that thrives on creating easy points off relentless defensive pressure.
The Green Hornets (4-8, 3-3) are very much in the hunt for a state playoff berth. Even with a loss to H-K-T, CAJ will enter the second half of the region campaign with at least a share of fourth place. Whitney Green is averaging 16.7 points in region games, while Jamie Corbitt is averaging 12.7 ppg in conference outings.
