Dutch Fork travels to Irmo tonight looking to lock up the Region 5-4A girls basketball championship.
The Silver Foxes (16-4, 12-1) enter the regular season finale with a one-game lead over Orangeburg-Wilkinson, which hosts winless Richland Northeast. DF beat Irmo 63-43 last Saturday in a rescheduled game. The Yellow Jackets (16-7, 9-4) need a win to avoid a potential deadlock for fourth place with Aiken and a resolution by complicated tie-breaking procedures. Aiken enters tonight’s game at home against North Augusta with an 8-5 record. An Irmo win or an Aiken loss or losses by both teams makes things easy – Irmo will be No. 4, Aiken No. 5.
Devin Pearson scored 20 points in last week’s Dutch Fork win vs. Irmo, and the smooth senior guard is averaging 12.5 points a game for the season. Aliana Coates and Shyianne Oakman, the Silver Foxes’ 6-4 twins towers, have been outstanding in the paint. Coates is averaging 13.1 points and 10.5 rebounds, while Oakman is at 10.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg.
On the boys side, Lexington (20-4, 11-2) clinched the region championship on Tuesday, while Richland Northeast (18-8, 8-5) moved into a second-place tie with Irmo with a win vs. the Yellow Jackets. RNE plays at O-W tonight, while Irmo (18-5, 9-5) hosts Dutch Fork. If the Cavaliers and Irmo both win, Irmo is the No. 2 seed.
Lexington, RNE and Irmo are assured of state playoff invitations. White Knoll, Aiken and Dutch Fork are in the hunt for the fifth and final postseason berth. White Knoll (15-9, 6-7) plays at Lexington tonight, Aiken (6-7) takes on North Augusta and Dutch Fork (9-11, 5-8) must win at Irmo to have a shot.
