Dutch Fork earned one last shot at landing a Class 4A state playoff berth by upsetting Irmo on Friday in the final round of Region 5-4A boys basketball.
The Silver Foxes capped a big final week with Friday’s 59-49 win over the second-place Yellow Jackets.
The late surge allowed DF (10-11 overall) to catch Aiken and North Augusta in a tie for fifth place. The Silver Foxes host Aiken (12-11) tonight at 6 p.m., with the winner earning the last available playoff invitation out of the region. DF beat the Green Hornets 71-57 on Tuesday. North Augusta is not eligible for postseason play because of a preseason practice violation.
The last round of games on Friday produced some crazy results, the Dutch Fork upset of Irmo notwithstanding. Richland Northeast blew a chance to secure second place and by losing 56-50 at Orangeburg-Wilkinson to the last-place Bruins. The Cavaliers were without starter Daris Cosby, who was sick.
White Knoll clinched fourth place and a playoff berth by beating archrival Lexington 66-55 behind the double-digit production of DeQuan Grooms (17 points), Jamar Jackson (15), Eric White (13) and Dermaine Smith (12). The Timberwolves carry a 16-9 record into the state playoffs.
Shaq Roland tallied 25 points for Lexington, which wrapped up their first region championship in eight years on Tuesday. The Wildcats (20-5) have a first-round Class 4A playoff date at home on Monday.
