Sophomore Eliese Cedillo’s early-season scoring binge has helped the Gilbert boys soccer team get off to a 4-2 start as it gears up for the start of the all-important Region 3-2A campaign on March 24. It will be a new experience for the Indians, who competed in recent years in soccer-poor Region 4-2A.
The Tribe opens play in the fully staffed region against Batesburg-Leesville, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 2A-1A.
To date, Kevin Darlington’s club had a 2-1 showing at its own Gilbert/Schlotzky’s Soccer Classic preseason tournament, and is 2-1 in regular season, non-region matches. The Indians have not had much trouble finding the back of the net so far, ringing up 26 goals.
Cedillo, who plays at midfield and up front, pumped in eight goals in Gilbert’s three tournament matches – four in an 8-2 win over Fox Creek, three in a 7-2 success against future region foe Mid-Carolina and had the lone Tribe tally in a 2-1 PK loss to first-year Ashley Ridge from Summerville. He has kept up the torrid pace in the regular season with two scores in a 4-2 loss to 3A Brookland-Cayce, three more in 6-0 win over Columbia and one in a 2-1 success againmst Barnwell.
Freshman forward Gustavo De Los Reyes and senior midfielder Matt Yuhas have been Cedillo’s main offensive supporters. De Los Reyes has five goals to date, while Yuhas has four. De Los Reyes had two tournament tallies, two goals against Columbia and one vs. Barnwell. Yuhas had two goals in both Gilbert tournament wins.
Cedillo, freshman forward Jacob Bedenbaugh, senior midfielder Cal McCormick and senior defender Jacob Stuckey made the Schlotzky’s Classic all-tournament team.
