After turning in a 4-1 showing over the weekend at the Lexington Wildcat Invitational tournament, the Brookland-Cayce softball team is gearing up for Tuesday’s home showdown with Region 5-3A archrival Midland Valley.
The Bearcats (8-1 overall, 2-0 in region) shared the regular season title last season with the Mustangs, but MV won a playoff game to earn the No. 1 region seed in the Class 3A state playoffs. The lower seed did not effect B-C, however. Richard Lundy’s team went on to win a district championship, coming out of the loser’s bracket to sweep St. James in the finals doubleheader to advance to the Lower State championship series. MV also won their district title, and eventually lost to Darlington in the LS final.
The Mustangs from Graniteville enter the latest B-C confrontation with a 9-1 record.
The Bearcats faltered only against resurgent Lexington at the 16-team tournament at Pine Grove, losing 1-0. B-C went on to claim the Gold Division title – involving all the second-place pool teams – with wins over White Knoll (6-1) and Blythewood (4-2).
Alex White and Chandler Terrapin are off to great statistical starts for B-C. White leads the team in virtually every offensive category. The junior third baseman is hitting .594 (19-for-32) with 10 runs scored, 14 RBIs, two doubled and three home runs. Terrapin is doing it in the pitching circle and at the plate. The freshman right-hander is 7-1 with a microscopic 0.14 ERA in the circle. She has 77 strikeouts while allowing only 17 hits and issuing just 12 walks in 50 innings of work. Terrapin is also second on the team with a .419 batting average (13-for-31).
But while White and Terrapin have put up some big numbers, B-C has had plenty of offensive contributors so far. Junior catcher Ashlyn Hicks is hitting .353 with 10 runs scored, Senior second baseman Marquitta Wilson is hitting .325 with seven runs and seven RBIs. Senior shortstop Casey Corbitt is batting .313 with eight RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Asia Benn is hitting .300 with seven runs scored. Senior outfielder Cortesia Taylor is batting .375 with six hits (one double, one triple) and three RBIs.
Sophomore Alexis Lucas, the No. 2 pitcher, is 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 13 innings.
