Keeper Timmy Cunningham got the win in both region outings, and he also scored a goal vs. the Falcons … Cardinal Newman has swept nearby public school foes A.C. Flora and Dreher, and turned in a game effort in a 4-2 loss to powerhouse Northwestern on March 17 in Rock Hill. The mighty Trojans are the defending 4A state champions, and are ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN … Beaudoin has seven goals to lead the team. Roldan has five on the books and Winstead and Nick O’Rourke have three goals apiece … The Cards have an interesting three-match set on tap next week – Tuesday vs. Academic Magnet at home, Wednesday at St. Joeeph’s and Friday at home against Hammond ... Academic Magnet, 4-0 through March 21, boasts a 69-9 record since 2005, win the 1A state championship in 2005, finishing second to Christ Church last season with two semifinal appearances in between.
CARDINAL NEWMAN GIRLS - The Cards stand at 3-2 overall, 2-0 in SCISA Region 1-3A, and have won three in a row … Alexa Barnes has been a scoring machine in the early going with five goals. Three of her scores came in region wins over Augusta Christian (7-0) and Ben Lippen (2-0) … Molly Rainwater has been credited with three wins, but Beth Eckstein has also play well in the net, and earned a shutout against Belton-Honea Path.
HAMMOND GIRLS - After getting off to an 0-2, the Skyhawks have even things up with wins over SCISA Region 1-3A rivals Augusta Christian (12-1) and St. Joseph’s (4-1) … Sarah Spector’s hat trick was the difference in the home win against St. Joe’s. Spector added two more tallies in the romp against AC. Sarah Prickett had the hat trick vs. AC and had the other goals vs. St. Joseph’s. Sally Mills and Margaret Deans Fawcett joined in the fun against the overmatched Lions by depositing three and two goals, respectively … Next week, Hammond travels to St. Joseph’s on Tuesday and to Cardinal Newman on Friday.
HAMMOND BOYS - The Skyhawks aren’t acting like a rebuilding team that is trying to find its way after the graduation loss of 10 seniors off the best team in school history (16-3). On the contrary, Hammond is off to a 6-1 start, losing only to Wren – a 4A public school – by a 3-2 count … Best of all, the Skyhawks are 3-0 in SCISA Region 1-3A action – downing Ben Lippen (2-0), St. Joseph’s (2-1) and Augusta Christian (2-1). The conquest of St. Joe’s was particularly satisfying for the few returning varsity hands. The Knights from Greenville, after all, ruined a potential great 2008 season by upsetting Hammond 1-0 in the playoff semifinals last year … Rob Grosslight and football star Brad Meredith tallied in the Ben Lippen match in the season opener. Grosslight and Braeden Troyer lit the lamp vs. St. Joseph’s. Adam Jenkins and Matthew McClam found the back of the net against improved Augusta Christian … Keeper Jack Felmly has three shutouts to date, including a 1-0 win over A.C. Flora in the team’s most recent outing on March 17. Meredith scored the only goal of the match … Hammond returns to action next week after a two-week break. The Skyhawks will indeed find out where it stands with road dates with St. Joseph’s (Tuesday) and Cardinal Newman (Friday).
HEATHWOOD HALL - The Highlanders appear to be much stronger this season after last year’s 6-11 performance. Heathwood Hall entered spring break at 3-2 overall, 2-1 in SCISA Region 1-3A … Conner Kirol and Taylor Zurcher got the goals in HH’s 2-1 overtime win against Augusta Christian, while Kyle Maitand accounted for the goal in a 1-0 win over Ben Lippen …Carter Genova was the keeper in both region wins … Will Metzger scored three goals in the Highlanders’ 7-0 rout of Blackville-Hilda.
