The Ridge View Lady Blazers traveled to Sumter on Thursday, 3/26/09 to take onthe Gamecocks (5-2) in a rematch of an earlier meeting between these two teamswhere Sumter defeated the Blazers 10-0. This one was a much closer contesthowever, as both pitchers kept it a low scoring affair, with Sumter carrying a3-2 lead into the home half of the 6th inning.
Starters Brooke Dimock (RV) and Sutton Watson (Sumter) were both veryeffective early, with neither allowing a run through the first 3 innings ofplay. Ridge View had a couple of early opportunities as they stranded a pairof runners in each of the first two innings after a walk in each inning, andsingles by Stephanie Junker and Brooke Dimock.
Sumter opened the scoring in the bottom of the 4th inning, picking up anunearned run when Robbi Winfield scored on a 2-out groundball throwing errorto first from the Blazer shortstop. Winfield had reached base on an infieldsingle after lining a pitch off of Dimock's leg on the mound. Sumterincreased their lead to 3-0 in the 5th, scoring a pair after a leadoff singleup the middle from Emily Whetsel, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a Blazerthrowing error on a play at first, which bounced away from first basemanStephanie Sweatman.
The Blazers answered back in the 6th, scoring 2 to make it a 3-2 Sumter lead.Blazer catcher Katelyn Smith got things started with a 1-out, 2-strike singlethrough the right side, followed by a walk to Tre Medlin, and an infieldsingle up the middle by Stephanie Sweatman. Following a strikeout, Blazer 2BNatalie Davis drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first run for RidgeView. The second run of the inning scored on a throwing error from thecatcher attempting to pick off Medlin at third.
The Gamecocks widened the margin in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 3 to go up6-2. The big hits of the inning were a long rbi-triple to left field fromEmily Whetsel for her third hit of the night, followed by an rbi-single up themiddle from leadoff hitter Erin Cook. The Blazers made things interesting inthe 7th with a leadoff infield single up the middle from Megan Woodall,followed by a looping single to right off the second baseman's glove byStephanie Junker, each getting their 2nd hit of the game. But Sumter's Watsonclosed the door with 3 consecutive outs to strand the runners.
Watson scattered 7 hits on the night, but struck out 15 Blazer batters, usingher array of risers, curves, and changeups to record clutch outs with runnerson base. Dimock pitched effectively for Ridge View also, with only 3 of theruns allowed being earned. This brings Ridge View's overall record to 3-9,but still 1-1 in Region 4-4A with a matchup with South Pointe scheduled forFriday, barring rain.
