The Ridge View Lady Blazers traveled to Sumter on Thursday, 3/26/09 to take on the Gamecocks (5-2) in a rematch of an earlier meeting between these two teams where Sumter defeated the Blazers 10-0. This one was a much closer contest however, as both pitchers kept it a low scoring affair, with Sumter carrying a 3-2 lead into the home half of the 6th inning.
Starters Brooke Dimock (RV) and Sutton Watson (Sumter) were both very effective early, with neither allowing a run through the first 3 innings of play. Ridge View had a couple of early opportunities as they stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two innings after a walk in each inning, and singles by Stephanie Junker and Brooke Dimock.
Sumter opened the scoring in the bottom of the 4th inning, picking up an unearned run when Robbi Winfield scored on a 2-out groundball throwing error to first from the Blazer shortstop. Winfield had reached base on an infield single after lining a pitch off of Dimock's leg on the mound. Sumter increased their lead to 3-0 in the 5th, scoring a pair after a leadoff single up the middle from Emily Whetsel, a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a Blazer throwing error on a play at first, which bounced away from first baseman Stephanie Sweatman.
The Blazers answered back in the 6th, scoring 2 to make it a 3-2 Sumter lead. Blazer catcher Katelyn Smith got things started with a 1-out, 2-strike single through the right side, followed by a walk to Tre Medlin, and an infield single up the middle by Stephanie Sweatman. Following a strikeout, Blazer 2B Natalie Davis drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first run for Ridge View. The second run of the inning scored on a throwing error from the catcher attempting to pick off Medlin at third.
The Gamecocks widened the margin in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 3 to go up 6-2. The big hits of the inning were a long rbi-triple to left field from Emily Whetsel for her third hit of the night, followed by an rbi-single up the middle from leadoff hitter Erin Cook. The Blazers made things interesting in the 7th with a leadoff infield single up the middle from Megan Woodall, followed by a looping single to right off the second baseman's glove by Stephanie Junker, each getting their 2nd hit of the game. But Sumter's Watson closed the door with 3 consecutive outs to strand the runners.
Watson scattered 7 hits on the night, but struck out 15 Blazer batters, using her array of risers, curves, and changeups to record clutch outs with runners on base. Dimock pitched effectively for Ridge View also, with only 3 of the runs allowed being earned. This brings Ridge View's overall record to 3-9, but still 1-1 in Region 4-4A with a matchup with South Pointe scheduled for Friday, barring rain.
