Dreher maintained footing atop the Region 5-3A baseball standings with a 5-3 win over last-place Midland Valley on Friday night.
Junior Chandler Knox improved to 4-0 on the season with a less-than-tidy, complete-game effort. Knox served up eight hits to the host Mustangs, but wiggled out of enough jams to prevail. Fanning 11 MV batters certainly helped, as did not issuing any free passes. One of the hits off Knox was a solo home run by Mustangs pitcher Taylor Grover.
The Blue Devils (9-4, 6-1) struck first in the second inning. Alex Wilcox drew a two-out walked and raced home on a double to the left-field corner by Michael O’Neal. The two teamed up for an insurance run in the sixth. Wilcox rapped a double and scored on O’Neal’s single. Dreher put three decisive runs on the board in the fifth. Catcher Matt Spotts lined a bases-loaded single that eluded the MV left fielder, allowing all three base runners to score.
Dreher heads into spring break with a one-game lead in the 5-3A standings over Brookland-Cayce, Airport and South Aiken.
