Spring Valley turned in a third-place finish at the Father Kelly Classic track and field meet on Saturday at Bishop England behind the stellar performances of bothers Matthew and Michael Johnson.
Matthew Johnson, a junior, came away with two gold medals and one silver, while senior Michael Johnson picked up one gold and two silvers while leading the Vikings 62-point scoring effort. Spring Valley fell in behind Lowercountry entries Summerville (122 points) and West Ashley (82.5) in the final team standings.
Matthew Johnson won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.21, one spot ahead of Michael Johnson who clocked in at 2:00.87. The Johnson then teamed up on SV’s winning 4x800 relay team and the second-place 4x400 quartet. Seniors Jon Woods and Martin Gonzalez were the other contributors on winning 3200 relay. Senior Jordan Jenkins and eighth-grader were part of the silver medal 1600 relay team.
Jenkins and Gonzalez also chipped in individually with seventh-place finishes in the 400 and the 1600 races, respectively.
Marcus Harlan scored in both hurdles events – picking up a bronze medal for a third-place finish in the 110s, and finishing fifth in the 400s.
Bradley Gibson and William Ivey chipped in with fifth-place finishes in the long jump and 3200 meters, respectively.
