Dutch Fork hosts Irmo is a key Region 5-4A girls soccer match on Tuesday night. The unbeaten, third-ranked Silver Foxes boast a 6-0 region record, one game ahead of the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets.
While that match has first-place implications, Tuesday’s Lexington at White Knoll and Aiken at North Augusta are key contests in the developing scramble for state playoff invitations/seeding. Region 5-4A has five automatic berths in the 4A Lower State playoff bracket, meaning one of the above four teams will be left out in the cold. Also on Tuesday, Richland Northeast travels to Orangeburg-Wilkinson in a battle of winless sides.
Dutch Fork – The veteran Silver Foxes (8-0 overall) have been good, but not without a few scares along the way. DF had one-goal wins over Region 4-4A leading Ridge View, vastly improved White Knoll and, most recently, Aiken in the team’s last match before spring break … Stephanie Gauthier took care of all the Foxes scoring in 3-2 win at Aiken on March 3 on the eve of spring break. The hat trick allowed Gauthier to take over the team scoring lead with six goals … Sarah Haacker and Sam Vickers have been the other top DF producers with five and four goals, respectively.
Irmo – The Yellow Jackets (8-1) rebounded from a 2-1 upset loss to North Augusta on March 24 to win three straight region outings before going on break … One pressing concern is the defense, which has coughed up seven goals in the last four matches after surrendering just two scores in the first five matches of the season … Amy Dherckers and Bianca Warder have been prolific scorers, posting 13 and 12 goals, respectively. Warder has found the range in eight of Irmo’s nine outings to date. Dherckers has two hat tricks on the books.
White Knoll – The Timberwolves (6-3, 3-2) have already beaten playoff contenders North Augusta (2-0) and Aiken (1-0) and gave Dutch Fork a scare in a 1-0 loss. The lone bad outing was a 5-3 loss to Irmo … Heather Hale scored both goals vs. North Augusta.
Lexington – The rebuilding, defending region champion Wildcats (5-7, 3-3) have had trouble finding the back of the net. Lexington has only 14 goals to date and has been shut out five times. The bulk of which have come from two players - Taylor Piorkowski (7) and Hilary Daly (5).
Region 5-4A standings
Dutch Fork 6-0; Irmo 5-1; White Knoll 3-2; Lexington 3-3; North Augusta 3-3; Aiken 2-3; Orangeburg-Wilkinson 0-4; Richland Northeast 0-6.
