Dutch Fork remained unbeaten by downing crosstown rival Irmo 2-1 on Wednesday.
In the process, the Silver Foxes, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, took a game-game lead over the Yellow Jackets in the Region 5-4A girls soccer standings. DF spotted Irmo a 1-0 lead in the first half, but stormed back to prevail on goals by Mary Kathryn Macklen and Sarah Haacker. Dutch Fork is now 9-0 overall, 7-0 in region play. Irmo dropped to 8-2, 5-2.
“We started out a little tentative and nervous, but we started to get organized midway through the first half and played pretty well from there,” said Silver Foxes coach Hayne Painter.
Danielle Werdunn staked Irmo to a 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the season 20 minutes into the match. Macklen countered with an unassisted goal with about 20 minutes left in the first half to knot the score. Haacker got the winner with 25 minutes left in the match, running down a cross from the left side by Stephanie Gauthier and banking a shot in off an Irmo defender. It was Haacker’s sixth goal of the season, trying her with Gauthier for the team lead.

Keeper Katie Nesbit posted her fourth straight win since being elevated to the starting role in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to senior Katie Wallace. The hard-luck Wallace tore her right ACL in a 1-0 win against White Knoll on March 24. Wallace tore her left ACL just prior to the start of the state playoffs last season.
