Sumter earned the No. 1 state playoff seed in Region 6-4A baseball thanks to a 5-2 win Friday at Gamecocks Field over Carolina Forest. The Gamecocks finished in a tie for first place with Hartsville, but got the top seed thanks to Conway’s 9-0 win over West Florence on Friday.
Sumter is the top seed in District VI and will have home games as long as it keeps winning in the first phase of the state playoffs. The Gamecocks will take on either the No. 5 team out of Region 5-4A or the No. 4 seed out of Region 7-4A in the first round on April 30.
The Gamecocks took the lead for good, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning on a successful squeeze bunt by Matt King that scored Brantley Foxworth, and put it away in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run by Stephen Curtis.
Jordan Montgomery was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Tyler Smith, who fanned the only CF batter he faced to close out the game and earn a save.
