Heathwood Hall swept Florence Christian in a SCISA Class 3A first-round doublehead to advance to second round play on Friday. The Highlanders travel to Bishopville to face the Robert E. Lee Academy Cavaliers in another twinbill. If a third game is necessary to determine a winner in the best-of-three series, it will be Saturday at Heathwood Hall.
REL, the Region 3-3A champion, drew a first-round bye. The Cavaliers (12-5) claimed their first region pennant since 1991 this spring.
The Highlanders (13-7) defeated FC 2-0 in the first game at home on Monday, then sent the Eagles packing with a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Melton Bristow fired a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the opener, while Whit Hensely had a complete-game win in the second game, scattering eight FC hits. Offensively, the Highlanders managed just eight hits in the double dip, just two coming in the first game. Chris Leventis and Bristow scored the only two runs in the opener, and Derek Kazmarski had the game's lone RBI without the benefit of a hit. In the nightcap, Davis Ray and Chris Bartron had two hits apiece for the Highlanders. Barton scored two runs. Bristow chipped in a two-run double.
Ray, Barton and Bristow continue to be the big guns in the HH attack. Ray now sports a .488 batting average (21-for-49) with 13 runs, 12 RBIs and 13 steals. Barton carries a .365 batting average with 21 runs and nine steals into the second round. Bristow stands at .371 with 19 runs, 21 RBIs and 14 doubles. Bristow improved to 5-2 on the hill and lower his ERA to 1.80 thanks to his gem outing on Monday.
