A.C. Flora rallied to beat visiting Union County on Tuesday to rate another shot at Riverside in the Class 3A state baseball playoffs.
The Falcons (17-9) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by pinch hitter Alex Mitchell to plate Duy Phan. Roy Faulks’ ringing double scored Connor Lewis with ACF’s first run in the first inning. Joseph O’Steen tossed an economical four-hitter to pick up the mound win, needed only 78 pitches to dispatch the tough Yellow Jackets. Flora need a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to nip UC 5-4 in the first round.
A.C. Flora travels to Riverside tonight to play for the District III championship, needing two wins over the host Warriors to qualify for the Elite Eight for the seventh straight season. Riverside, a perennial Upper State power, thumped the Falcons 11-0 in the second round.
“That just wasn’t our night,” said ACF coach Andy Hallett. “But we have our two top starters and four pitchers all rested and ready to go, so we’ll see what happens.”
