White Knoll secured its fourth district softball championship, its first since 2005, by downing Sumter 2-1 in the Class 4A District V finale on Thursday.
The Timberwolves (23-6) open the Lower State championship tournament on Saturday at home against South Florence.
Shelly Jeffcoat improved to 19-4 in the circle, scattering six Sumter hits while strikeout out five and issuing just one walk. Jeffcoat has not allowed an earned run in three playoff outings.
White Knoll took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Brittany Williamson’s leadoff single and Nicole Stancil’s two-out, RBI single. The Timberwolves tallied the game-winning run in the third on Kali Bishop’s two-out single that drove in Sara Eisenhower.
Sumter’s lone run came in the fifth. Emily Whetsel, who reached base on a three-base error, scored on a bunt by Morgan Mixon.
Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, but Jeffcoat and Sumter’s Sutton Watson made runs hard to come by. In the end, WK stranded 11 runners on base, Sumter eight.
The Gamecocks finished with a vastly improved 19-10 record this season after going 8-17 and missing the state playoff cut in 2008.
