Gilbert was the lone Midlands survivor in the first round of the Class 2A boys soccer playoffs on Tuesday.
The seventh-ranked Indians (17-2) blew by visiting Abbeville 6-1, and will take on Woodruff at home on Thursday in second-round action. Otherwise, Mid-Carolina, Newberry and Eau Claire had their seasons come to a close. The toughest loss was a 4-3 setback by Newberry against Southside, which scored two late goals to break a 2-2 deadlock and held on to survive a furious Bulldogs rally after Jairo Samoya scored late to restore some hope. Andrew Jackson eliminated M-C, 5-0, and EC took an 11-0 drubbing at the hands of Walhalla.
Second-ranked Batesburg-Leesville (13-1) is the only other Midlands team still in the 2A hunt. The 13-1 Panthers, the No. 1 seed in the Upper State bracket, drew a first-round bye and hosts Southside on Thursday.
Scoring machine Eliese Cedillo and Matt Yuhas score two goals apiece in Gilbert’s romp vs. Abbeville. Cedillo, the Midlands leading scorer by a wide margin, now has 56 goals and 19 assists for 131 points. The lethal sophomore striker had found the back of the net in 14 straight matches and has failed to score a goal in only two of the Tribe’s 24 outings to date. He has 22 goals in the last five matches. Yuhas caught teammate Gustavo De Los Reyes for second place on the team with his two tallies, bringing his season total to 19.
Never miss a local story.
Jacob Bedenbaugh and Chip Sox also got in the scoring action. Both players have five goals on the books.
