Batesburg-Leesville and Gilbert moved on to the third round of the Class 2A state boys soccer playoffs with home wins on Thursday.
Second-ranked B-L, which drew a first-round as the No. 1 seed in the Upper State bracket, breezed by Southside 7-1 is its postseason debut. Jon Dachenhaus and Kurt Bostelear scored two goals apiece for the Panthers, who improved to 14-1. Ben Grime, Michael Oswald and Elliott Jeffcoat accounted for the other B-L scores.
The Panthers hosts Walhalla (13-10) in third-round action on Saturday. The Razorbacks advanced with a 2-0 win over Andrew Jackson on Thursday.
Gilbert usually beats opponents with a potent attack, but defense was the story in last night’s 1-0 second-round win over Woodruff. In fact, it was the smallest winning margin in any of the Tribe’s nine shutout wins this season. Jacob Bedenbaugh tallied the only goal of the match. Eliese Cedillo’s 14-match goal-scoring streak came to an end.
The Indians (18-5) travel to Greenwood on Saturday to face Emerald. The Vikings, the No. 2 seed in the Upper State, edged Palmetto 1-0 on a goal in the 73rd minute last night.
