Blythewood finished with a 16-11 report card in its first baseball season at the Class 4A level. Not bad for what was considered to be a rebuilding season at the outset of the 2009 campaign.
“I thought our team progressively got better during the season and was playing its best baseball at the end of the season,” said coach Barry Mizzell. “Our seniors provide great leadership, especially towards the end of the season. We have a lot of returning players next year that will be inexperienced but talented. We look forward to seeing how they progress during the season.”
Sophomore Grayson Greiner and senior Daniel Andreu made the Region 4-4A all-region team. Griener, a catcher who has already committed to South Carolina, hit .420 with 19 runs, 23 RBIs and five home runs. Andreu batted .405 with 20 runs, 24 RBIs and three homer.
Andreu, Michael Hanzlik, Will Smith, Patrick Sheele and Taylor Bone are the departing senior starters. Hanzlik (3-2, 3.85 ERA), Smith (3-6, 2.06 ERA) and Bone (3-1, 2.39 ERA) formed the core of the pitching staff, leaving the biggest void on the team in 2010. Hanzlik also hit .303 with 19 runs and 12 RBIs.
Will Ferrell, Taylor Eubanks (15 runs, 15 RBIs), Daniel Young (.260, 10 RBIs), Brandon Burris (.256, 19 runs) and Alec Shettle are the returning starters expected to carry big loads next spring.
